General Rules for Online Safety

Keep the computer in an open space where he screen can be seen by anyone to monitor usage.

Don’t allow young children access to the computer without a secure browser to protect them from unwanted solicitation and access.

Monitor social networking to insure your child is not giving out personal information or allowing unknown people access. Even an email address can provide identifying information.

Help your child feel safe in coming to you anytime inappropriate or uncomfortable material appears online.

Establish guidelines for safety and usage together with your children.
THINK before you press send – pictures and text stay in cyberspace forever.

NEVER engage in sexting – it’s illegal and you could end up in jail. If you receive a sexually explicit picture, tell your parents immediately. NEVER send it back or to anyone else.

Stay away from any unfamiliar chat rooms or blogs. You don’t really know who is on the other end.

Be aware of red flags – someone pressing for personal information, wanting to keep secrets, asking about relationships. Predators will build relationships online to separate you from others.

Never post pictures online in hopes of securing a modeling or acting job – check with the agency.

Never arrange to meet someone offline you only know online without your parent’s knowing.

Posting digital pictures can give predators a precise location unless you disable the GPS module in your cell phone when taking the picture. Be very careful giving out location information online. (See video link for news story)

Report cyber crimes and suspicious behaviors to parents or authorities. You could save a life.
